The best GPU for 4K gaming in 2026 is the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB. On October 8, 2026, we found it for $859.91 at Amazon (sold by Amazon.com), $879.99 at Newegg and $929.99 at Best Buy. In TechSpot's 52-game test from May 2026, it averaged 81 fps at 4K. The GeForce RTX 5070 Ti averaged 84.
That is the whole case. The RTX 5070 Ti was about 4% faster at 4K in that test, and it costs about a third more: $1,169.99 at Newegg, $1,249.99 at Best Buy. The RTX 5080 is $1,699.99 at Best Buy, and we found no standalone RTX 5080 or RTX 5090 sold by Newegg and in stock. Prices have also moved: the RX 9070 XT is about $130 to $150 above the $730 to $750 TechSpot found in September.
Be realistic about 4K. The RX 9070 XT averaged 57 fps in 007 First Light, 63 fps in Battlefield 6 and 78 fps in Ghost of Tsushima in TechSpot's September tests, all at high settings. That is good, but it is not 120 fps. For that, you need an RTX 5090, and we explain below why most people shouldn't buy one.
We did not test these cards ourselves. Every performance figure comes from a named reviewer with a date, and every price comes from a retailer listing we checked and dated. For other budgets, see our Best Graphics Cards for Gaming in 2026 hub.
What 4K Actually Costs in October 2026#
We checked Newegg (in stock, sold by Newegg), Best Buy (Aiea, Hawaii store pickup, in stock) and Amazon (cards sold by Amazon.com) on October 8, 2026. Stock changes by the day, so treat every figure as a snapshot.
| Card | VRAM | 4K speed (reviewer) | Price we saw | Our take for 4K |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Radeon RX 9070 XT | 16GB | 81 fps average, 52 games (TechSpot, May 2026) | $859.91 (Amazon); $879.99 (Newegg); $929.99 (Best Buy) | Best pick |
| Radeon RX 9070 | 16GB | 12% slower than the XT, 52 games (TechSpot, August 2026) | $699.99 (Newegg) | Cheaper way in |
| GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | 16GB | 84 fps average, 52 games (TechSpot, May 2026) | $1,169.99 (Newegg); $1,249.99 (Best Buy) | Only if the price gap shrinks |
| GeForce RTX 5080 | 16GB | about 15% faster than the RTX 5070 Ti (TechSpot's estimate) | $1,699.99 (Best Buy); none sold by Newegg in stock | Skip |
| GeForce RTX 5090 | 32GB | about 85 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing (TechSpot, August 2026) | No price found; see below | Flagship only |
| GeForce RTX 5070 | 12GB | the RX 9070 XT is about 25% faster (TechSpot, September 2026) | $829.99 (Newegg); $849.99 (Best Buy) | Skip |
| GeForce RTX 5060 Ti 16GB | 16GB | 42 fps average vs 72 fps for the RX 9070 XT (TechSpot, September 2026) | $829.99 (Newegg); $792.99 (Best Buy) | Skip |
Prices checked October 8, 2026. TechSpot's tests use different game lists and settings from article to article, so compare cards only within the same test. Best Buy figures are store pickup prices from one Hawaii store and will differ elsewhere. Stock and price vary by retailer.
Our own arithmetic on the table: at Newegg, the RTX 5070 Ti costs 33% more than the RX 9070 XT ($1,169.99 against $879.99), and at Best Buy 34% more ($1,249.99 against $929.99). The RTX 5080 at Best Buy costs 83% more than the RX 9070 XT there. The step from 16GB AMD to anything faster is expensive.
Best Pick: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB#
Why it's here: It is the best balance of 4K speed and price we found. In TechSpot's 52-game test, it averaged 81 fps at 4K, 3 fps behind the RTX 5070 Ti. It has 16GB of memory, which matters at 4K: in TechSpot's September 2026 test, the 12GB RTX 5070 ran into memory limits at 4K in Mafia: The Old Country and Star Wars Outlaws, and the RX 9070 XT was more than twice as fast in Mafia.
Who it's for: Someone with a 4K monitor or TV who wants 60 fps in new games, with upscaling when needed, and who doesn't want to spend more than $900.
What to buy: The cheapest 16GB model from a retailer you trust. On October 8, that was the Gigabyte Gaming OC at $859.91 from Amazon.com, the ASRock Challenger at $879.99 at Newegg, or the Gigabyte Gaming OC at $929.99 at Best Buy. Premium models cost more, up to $1,049.99 at Newegg, for very little extra speed.
What to expect at 4K: TechSpot's September 2026 results, at high settings, were 57 fps in 007 First Light (Ultra), 63 fps in Battlefield 6 (Overkill), 78 fps in Ghost of Tsushima (Very High) and 83 fps in Red Dead Redemption 2 (Ultra). Heavy games sit near 60 fps. That means upscaling, covered below, is part of 4K gaming on this card.
Caveats: Two. First, the price: it has gone up, from the $730 to $750 TechSpot used in September to $860 to $930 now. TechSpot's July report warned that prices could rise further. Second, ray tracing. In TechSpot's 52-game comparison with the RTX 5070 Ti, the GeForce led by 25% in Naraka: Bladepoint and GTA V Enhanced at 4K, and by 8% in Marvel's Spider-Man 2, where both cards fell below 40 fps. In Monster Hunter Wilds with ray tracing, they tied at 49 fps. At 4K, heavy ray tracing is hard on both.
Cheaper Way In: Radeon RX 9070 16GB#
The Radeon RX 9070 has the same 16GB and the same 256-bit memory design as the XT, and it was $699.99 at Newegg (the ASRock Challenger) on October 8. In TechSpot's August 2026 comparison across 52 games, the RX 9070 XT was 12% faster than the RX 9070 at 4K. TechSpot did not publish average frame rates for that test, only percentages.
By our own arithmetic, the RX 9070 XT at $879.99 costs 26% more than the RX 9070 at $699.99, which is $180. TechSpot's author wrote that he would choose the XT if the premium were 15% or less. At 26%, the cheaper card is the better value on paper, and it is our choice for anyone who is happy to lean on upscaling. We still pick the XT for 4K because the extra 12% is useful headroom at a resolution where heavy games sit near 60 fps. If the gap between them falls under 15%, the XT is an easy call.
If You Want NVIDIA: GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB#
Why it's here: It is the fastest 4K card we would consider under $1,300, and it gets DLSS 4, which TechSpot found has better image quality in most titles. In TechSpot's 52-game test it averaged 84 fps at 4K against 81 fps for the RX 9070 XT, and TechSpot credited its better 4K scaling to 40% more memory bandwidth.
The problem is the price. At Newegg it is $1,169.99 and at Best Buy $1,249.99, which is 33% to 34% more than the RX 9070 XT. By our own arithmetic, at Newegg prices that is about $10.86 per frame for the RX 9070 XT (using 81 fps) and $13.93 for the RTX 5070 Ti (using 84 fps), or 28% more per frame. TechSpot's May article said a premium of about 20% "could perhaps be defended," and that a premium of about 40% was a much harder sell, and the author said "we would choose the Radeon every time."
Our rule: Buy the RTX 5070 Ti only if it costs no more than about 20% above the RX 9070 XT. With the RX 9070 XT at $879.99, that is about $1,055. Today it is about $115 over that line at Newegg, and about $135 over at Best Buy against that store's own RX 9070 XT price. If you play games that use ray tracing or DLSS-only features, and you can afford the gap, it is a good card. We would not pay a third more for it.
Upscaling: DLSS 4 vs FSR 4 at 4K#
At 4K, many players use upscaling to reach 60 fps or more, so it matters which card does it better. TechSpot's November 2025 comparison of the two cards tested upscaling at 1440p, not 4K, so treat it as a guide only. It found that DLSS 4 offers better image quality in most titles and is supported in more games. In games that support FSR 4, the RX 9070 XT gave a similar experience to the RTX 5070 Ti. In games without FSR 4, the GeForce had a large image-quality advantage.
The practical advice is simple. Before you buy an AMD card, check that the games you play support FSR 4. If most of your library does, the RX 9070 XT is the better buy. If you play many games that only offer older AMD upscaling, that is the one good reason to pay more for NVIDIA.
If Money Is No Object: GeForce RTX 5090#
The RTX 5090 is the only card that makes 4K feel easy. In TechSpot's August 2026 testing at 4K, with DLSS: about 85 fps in Cyberpunk 2077 with path tracing (DLSS Performance), 137 fps in Battlefield 6 at its Overkill setting (DLSS Quality) and 63 fps in Crimson Desert at its Cinematic setting. Without path tracing, Cyberpunk 2077 ran at 134 fps at 4K on its Ultra preset. TechSpot also found that the card runs 4K well and struggles only beyond it, at 6K.
We could not find a price. We found no standalone RTX 5090 sold by Newegg, and none at Best Buy, in stock on October 8. At Amazon, the RTX 5090 listings from several brands showed only "See options," with no price on the listing, and Amazon's own price filter started at $4,400. TechSpot's July 31, 2026 pricing report put the lowest in-stock US price at $3,980 and said the card is closer to a workstation card than a gaming GPU. Its launch review listed a board power of 575 W.
Our view: Buy it only if you want maximum settings and high frame rates at 4K and money is not the limit. For everyone else, it costs about four and a half times as much as the RX 9070 XT, going by TechSpot's July price.
Cards to Skip at 4K#
- RTX 5080 16GB ($1,699.99 at Best Buy). TechSpot called it a poor high-end option, saying it costs about 33% more than the RTX 5070 Ti for about 15% more performance. At Best Buy today, by our own arithmetic, it costs 36% more than the RTX 5070 Ti ($1,699.99 against $1,249.99). We found no standalone card sold by Newegg in stock.
- RTX 5070 12GB ($829.99 at Newegg, $849.99 at Best Buy). TechSpot found the RX 9070 XT about 25% faster at 4K, and the RTX 5070's 12GB ran out in two games. At Newegg, the RX 9070 XT costs only $50 more.
- RTX 5060 Ti 16GB ($829.99 at Newegg, $792.99 at Best Buy). In TechSpot's September 24, 2026 test, the RX 9070 XT averaged 72 fps at 4K against 42 fps for the RTX 5060 Ti, a margin of 71%. TechSpot's verdict was that "paying the GeForce tax simply isn't worth it." At our October prices, the RX 9070 XT costs about $50 more than the Newegg listing.
- Bundles. Amazon sells RX 9070 XT bundles with power supplies, cases and motherboards. Compare the bundle price to the card alone, and don't pay for parts you don't need.
How to Choose#
- Confirm your target. If you want 4K at 60 fps with upscaling, the RX 9070 XT is enough. If you want 4K at 120 fps or more in new games, only the RTX 5090 did that in the tests we read.
- Check the memory. Buy 16GB at minimum. The 12GB RTX 5070 ran into limits in two games at 4K.
- Check upscaler support. FSR 4 on AMD and DLSS 4 on NVIDIA are not supported in the same games. Look up the games you play.
- Compare same-store prices. The same card was $859.91 at Amazon, $879.99 at Newegg and $929.99 at Best Buy.
- Buy the cheapest 16GB model. Premium versions of the same chip cost up to $170 more at Newegg for very little speed.
- Set a ceiling. We'd pay up to about $930 for the RX 9070 XT, and about $1,055 for an RTX 5070 Ti, which is 20% over the Newegg price of the XT.
- Don't count on prices falling. TechSpot's July report advised against buying a GPU unless you urgently need one, and we have not found a confirmed release date for new cards. If you need a card now, buy now. If you can wait, watch prices for a few weeks.

Is 16GB of VRAM enough for 4K?
For the games we read tests of, yes. TechSpot found the 12GB RTX 5070 running out of memory at 4K in two games, and the 16GB RX 9070 XT did not. We found no test where 16GB ran out.
Should I buy the RX 9070 or the RX 9070 XT for 4K?
The XT is 12% faster at 4K, according to TechSpot. At $879.99 against $699.99 at Newegg, it costs 26% more, so the RX 9070 is better value. We pick the XT for the headroom. Buy the RX 9070 if you will use upscaling and want to save $180.
Is the RTX 5070 Ti worth the extra money?
Not at today's price. It was about 4% faster at 4K in TechSpot's test and costs 33% to 34% more. We would buy it only at about $1,055 or less. Its advantages are DLSS 4 and ray tracing in some games.
Is the RTX 5080 worth it?
No. TechSpot called it a poor high-end option, and at Best Buy it costs 36% more than the RTX 5070 Ti for roughly 15% more speed, by TechSpot's estimate. We found no standalone card sold by Newegg in stock.
Is the RTX 5090 worth it?
Only if you want 4K at maximum settings, with high frame rates and path tracing, and price is not a concern. We could not find a price on October 8, and TechSpot's July report put it near $4,000. By TechSpot's July price, that is about four and a half times the cost of the RX 9070 XT.
Should I wait for prices to come down?
TechSpot's July advice was not to buy unless you urgently need a GPU. We have not found a confirmed release date for new cards, so we can't say when prices will ease. If you have a 4K screen and a weak card now, buying the RX 9070 XT is reasonable. If your current card works, waiting costs nothing.
Conclusion#
For 4K gaming at October 2026 prices, the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT 16GB is the pick, at $859.91 to $929.99. It averaged 81 fps at 4K in TechSpot's 52-game test against 84 fps for an RTX 5070 Ti that costs about a third more. If you want to spend less, the RX 9070 at $699.99 gives up about 12% of the speed.
Pay more only with a reason. Buy the RTX 5070 Ti if you need DLSS 4 and the price falls to about $1,055 or less. Buy the RTX 5090 if you want the best 4K experience and money isn't the limit. Skip the RTX 5080, the RTX 5070 and the RTX 5060 Ti.
